Description

William Hickling Prescott (1796‒1859) was a prominent American historian, best known for his important roles History of the Conquest of Mexico (1843) and also History of the Conquest of Peru (1847). From a booming New England family, he graduated from Harvard in 1814. He suffered bad health, such as near-blindness, throughout his lifetime, but he managed to perform his study with the assistance of his wife, Susan Amory Prescott, along with many others that read to him. Because of his meticulous use of archival documents and rare books as initial sources, he's frequently called America's first scientific historian. He picked large, sweeping topics for his job, and wrote about them with elegance and a story flair. The picture is from an album of largely Civil War-era portraits from the famed American photographer Matthew Brady (circa 1823‒96) that belonged to Emperor Pedro II of Brazil (1825‒91), a collector of photographs in addition to a photographer himself. The record was a present to the emperor from Edward Anthony (1818‒88), yet another ancient American photographer who, in partnership with his brother, possessed a business that at the 1850s became the major vendor of photographic supplies from the USA. Dom Pedro Might Have obtained the record in a Visit to America in 1876 when he, together with President Ulysses S. Grant, opened the Centennial Exposition at Philadelphia. Brady was born in upstate New York, the son of immigrants in Ireland. Famous for his photographs documenting the struggles of the American Civil Warhe started his profession in 1844 when he started a daguerreotype portrait studio in the corner of Broadway and Fulton Streets in nyc. Within the course of the upcoming several decades, Brady created portraits of top American people characters, many of which have been published as engravings in magazines and papers. The record, which also includes a few non-photographic prints, is a portion of this Thereza Christina Maria Collection in the National Library of Brazil. The collection consists of all 21,742 pictures gathered by Emperor Pedro II during his lifetime and contributed by him into the federal library. The group covers a huge array of subjects. It records the accomplishments of Brazil and Brazilians from the 19th century and includes many photos of Europe, Africa, and North America.
