Marshal Masséna returned to France in late 1809,


While the Grande Armée maneuvered across Austria, Masséna took the captured Verona before Fighting an Abysmal Struggle against Archduke Charles at Caldiero.


While he did not win any substantial battles, he would prevent the Archduke Charles from linking with the other Austrian and Russian armies, which aided helped Napoleon's entire plan for its powerful work.


He seized Capua in February of 1806 and entered Naples with Joseph Bonaparte who became King of Naples shortly afterwards. His request was granted in early 1807 and he got command of the V Corps. Adhering to the attempt that summer ended with the Treaty of Tilsit, Masséna repeatedly retired into Rueil. The next year he had been born the Duke of Rivoli in honor of his accomplishments in the battle in 1797. Back in September of 1808 Masséna engage at a hunting party at Fontainebleau where Napoleon accidentally shot him in the left eye causing him to eliminate sight in that eye, whilst Berthier took the blame for its horrible shot.


In May he proceeded on to grab bridge and town of Ebersberg with hefty reductions and Masséna take part from the damn Battle of Aspern-Essling. Though Marshal Lannes held Essling, Masséna held Aspern against the continuous onslaught of troops. Masséna was afterwards hurt in a fall from his horse, and in July when he commanded the left wing from the Battle of Wagram, he led his men from a carriage.2


Marshal Masséna returned to France in late 1809, in addition in early 1810 he had been born the Prince of Essling in recognition of his aid from the Battle of Aspern-Essling. He would not find much time for rest nevertheless, for in April he was appointed commander of the Army of Portugal regardless of his protests. Initially he refused the management until Napoleon personally spoke to him left promises of help to convince him to take the challenge. Masséna took charge on May 10th at Valladolid, bringing together two aide-de-camps, one of whom was Henriette Leberton, his mistress from Paris. Some of the officers who had served in Italy and Switzerland, such as Foy and Marbot, commented He had lost his resolve and energy.3


Masséna went into the offensive with his army, carrying Ciudad-Rodrigo in July and Almeida in August. This September he struck British General Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington, in Bussaco and was repulsed, but Masséna was able to outflank the circumstance and also induce Wellesley to fall back anyway. But since the French military improved, they discovered the augmented reality Lines of Torres Vedras which Wellesley was building in secret. Struggling to immediately challenge the lineup due to a lack of adequate siege equipment, Masséna anticipated to draw Wellesley out to battle but was unsuccessful. Finally because the French conducted from equipment and began to starve, he bought that the escape in March of 1811. The two armies met at Fuentes de Onoro where Masséna could not create progress and so unable to facilitate the French troops in Almeida.
