 Theodorus The Atheist - Life

Life

Theodorus was a disciple of those younger Aristippus, grandson of the more renowned Aristippus. He also heard the lectures of Several philosophers beside Aristippus; including as Anniceris, and Dionysius that the dialectician, Zeno of Citium, and Pyrrho.

He had been banished from Cyrene, but for what reason isn't said; and it's from the expression recorded of him on this occasion,"Guys of Cyrene, you really do poorly in banishing me from Libya into Greece," and out of his being a disciple of Aristippus, which it's inferred that he was a native of Cyrene. Of his subsequent history there's not any connected account; however, the anecdotes of him reveal he was at Athens, where he narrowly escaped being mentioned before the Areopagus court. The effect, but of Demetrius Phalereus guarded himand this episode may therefore likely be set through Demetrius' ten decades of government at Athens, 317--307 BC. Since Theodorus was discharged from Athens, and was later in the aid of Ptolemy in Egypt, it isn't improbable that he shared with the overthrow and exile of Demetrius. The account of Amphicrates of Athens mentioned by Diogenes Laërtius, he was condemned to drink hemlock and therefore expired, is an error. 1 response he left into some threat of crucifixion that Lysimachus had employed, was renowned by several ancient authors (Cicero, Seneca, etc.):"Employ these dangers to these courtiers of yours; for it matters not to Theodorus if he rots on the ground or in the atmosphere." In the camp or court of Lysimachus he returned seemingly into that of Ptolemy. We read of his visiting Corinth with lots of his own disciples: but that was possibly only a passing visit during his residence in Athens. He returned to Cyrene, also dwelt there, states Diogenes Laërtius, together with Magas, the stepson of Ptolemy, that dominated Cyrene for centuries (c. 300--250 BC) as viceroy and as king. Theodorus likely ended his days in Cyrene.
